In a proverbial spoonful of sugar scenario, a group of second and third graders tackled the complexities of the current economic crisis while playing Monopoly during Dominican Universitys Summer Gifted and Talented Program the week of July 6. In the process, they got a crash course in debt management and negotiation skills while sharpening their math skills. Titled Mathopoly, the one- week class used Monopoly as a springboard for studying real- world issues that children may be experiencing within their own families. And, to help students gain a better understanding of the realities of our economic system, players didnt start off on a level playing field. Some began the game flush with cash while others, representing the lower middle class, had to pull themselves up by the bootstraps. Its never too soon for young people to understand economics and money management, said Steve Parsons, director of the Summer Gifted and Talented Program and a history and psychology teacher at Lane Tech College Prep. He developed the idea of using Monopoly in the classroom to teach high school students about class structure, big business and the Progressive Era under Theodore Roosevelt. According to instructor Greg Mc. Nutt, a teacher at Chicagos Longwood Academy, the students seemed to have a good grasp of the consumption differences of the upper and lower classes. The students understood that the deck was kind of stacked against the kids who started out the game at a lower economic level than the students representing the upper class. No one bragged when they won the game if they started out with more money, and the losers werent too upset when they clearly started out at a disadvantage. But they were excited when someone who started out at a disadvantage ended up winning the game. Thats how it is in lifesometimes people succeed by beating the odds said Mc. Nutt.
